How much does it cost to get divorced

The cost to obtain a divorce in New York will depend on whether the case is contested or uncontested. An uncontested divorce, since it is relatively simple, will cost a lot less in legal fees. Here, each party is willing to settle amicably, and therefore it is cheaper than a contested divorce since it does not involve as many hours with lawyers, and a trial is not necessary. Our Law Firm typically charges less than $1,000.00 for an uncontested divorce, plus the court filing fees of $335.00, with our without children.

A contested divorce on the other hand involves so many variables that it is difficult to assess all of the fees to be incurred in an individual case, since a contested divorce case can wind its way through the courts for a period of six months to two years. Generally, depending on the circumstances of the case, our firm charges between $3,500.00 to $25,000.00 based on the length and complexity of the case, the issues to be resolved and if a trial is warranted. The court filing fees are additional to these fees. If the case is settled at the initial preliminary conference before the judge, our fee is a flat $3,500.00.
