tmcnultym@aol.comIn New York City, the typical waiting time for a divorce to be finalized ranges from three to six months. A request to the court to expedite the process to within ten days is possible when one of the divorcing parties is planning on getting remarried.
A petition to expedite is filed with the court requesting the judge to grant an uncontested divorce, along with the following proofs of the impending marriage -
Wedding Invitation
Wedding ring receipts from a jewellery store.
Restaurant/catering contract.
Tuxedo and wedding dress receipts.
Photography and video contracts.
Upon presentation of these documents, the court will grant the divorce in most cases, allowing the applicant to obtain a marriage license to remarry, instead of having to wait for a period of up to six months. This is sometimes known as a Preference divorce.
